Insurance is regulated by each state. That means claim deadlines, contractor rules, public adjuster licensing and consumer protections all differ depending on where the home is.
What differs by state
| Topic | What to check |
|---|---|
| Filing deadlines | Your policy’s notice requirement and any state time limit to sue |
| Contractor rules | Whether contractors may discuss or negotiate claims for you |
| Public adjusters | Licensing requirements and fee limits |
| Matching rules | Whether insurers must match undamaged areas when replacing damaged ones |
| Consumer help | How to file a complaint with the state insurance department |
Where to find your state’s rules
Every state has an insurance department that publishes consumer guides and takes complaints. Start there for official rules. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners lists every state department.
State guides
We are publishing a guide for each state, starting with Nevada and Arizona. Until then, follow the general claim process and check your state insurance department’s consumer pages.
